Our Journey 2020-2027

From personal discovery to creating inclusive, sensory-safe products for families

2020

The Beginning

My siblings and I began researching hair and skin care solutions after years of struggling with products that didn’t work for our hair types. This was the year I decided to do the big chop because I simply wanted a change. It was a pivotal moment that sparked our determination to find better, healthier alternatives for natural hair care.

We spent countless hours researching ingredients, reading studies, and understanding what our hair and skin truly needed. This research phase taught us about the importance of gentle, nourishing ingredients and how conventional products often contained harsh chemicals that could damage both hair and sensitive skin.

2021-22

Learning Through Challenges

These were transformative yet challenging years. I explored business options and learned the fundamentals of entrepreneurship, but the COVID-19 pandemic brought unexpected obstacles. Like many small businesses, we had to close temporarily due to limited support and economic uncertainty.

In 2022, I was diagnosed with autism and ADHD. This was liberating — it helped me understand my sensory sensitivities and why certain textures, sounds, and experiences felt overwhelming. I researched coping mechanisms specifically for people with tender scalps and sensitivities around hair washing.

This personal journey opened my eyes to how many people, especially children, struggle with sensory challenges during hair care routines. It became clear that the beauty industry was missing products designed with sensory needs in mind.

2023

Finding Purpose Through Adversity

2023 was a year of profound personal growth and professional development. I became a foster carer, deepening my understanding of children's diverse needs and the importance of creating safe, comfortable environments.

Surviving meningitis reinforced my commitment to health and wellness. During recovery, I qualified as a barber, gaining hands-on experience with different hair types and textures. Working directly with clients, I saw the gap in the market for healthy, environmentally friendly, multi-use products that could work effectively for all hair types and textures.

This professional experience, combined with my personal journey, solidified my vision for creating truly inclusive hair care products.

2024

Understanding & Transformation

I discovered that it isn’t the how of hair care that children struggle with, but the lack of understanding around why their hair is being done. I qualified as a hairdresser and refocused the brand on sensory-safe, inclusive solutions.

That year, I was recognised as a finalist for E-Commerce Trailblazer of the Year at the BizWomen Awards, introduced the brand to the Prime Minister of Jamaica, and officially joined the Buy Women Built community.

2025

Acceleration & Recognition

Joining the NatWest Accelerator program reshaped our vision and drive, providing mentorship, resources, and connections. We were featured in numerous NatWest adverts, which brought national attention to our mission of sensory-safe, inclusive hair care products.

We successfully completed markets with NatWest and Melanin Market, connecting directly with families and gaining real-time feedback. These experiences helped us expand collaborations with community events, local makers, and organizations supporting parents and children — strengthening our network of advocates for inclusive hair care.

We were also proud to be named a finalist for E-Commerce Excellence with BizWomen. Check out our latest news and events to find out more!

Digital Innovation & Education

This year, we introduced the Official True Beauty Ambassadors — seven characters created to reflect the diversity of hair types, skin tones, and sensory needs in our community. Each Ambassador represents a real experience, helping children and families understand that self-care can be gentle, inclusive, and fun:

  • Treasure – Lavender Chamomile: Everyone’s ‘normal’ looks different — and that’s what makes beauty real.
  • Joy – Lemon Wood: Encourages confidence and celebrates the joy of caring for hair and skin.
  • Noah – Shea Coco: Demonstrates routines and products that work for all textures.
  • Jace – Vanilla Mint: Inspires children to embrace different ways of communicating, including sign language, while enjoying sensory-safe care.
  • Mable & Frankie – Lavender Chamomile: Highlight the power of support, patience, and friendship during hair care.
  • Luna – Vanilla Mint: Sparks imagination and teaches families about routines that respect sensitive scalps and skin.

These Ambassadors are already being built with interactive profiles and images and will feature in our upcoming app, workshops, and educational content. They embody the heart of Official True Beauty: inclusivity, understanding, and celebration of every child’s unique beauty.

2027

The Sensory Safe Vision

Our vision is to create the first Official True Beauty Soft Play + Salon Space — a safe, sensory-aware environment where neurodivergent children can feel comfortable, play freely, and experience hair care without trauma.

The Ambassadors will guide children through this space, digital tools, and learning resources, making every hair care routine a moment of joy, confidence, and self-discovery.

By 2027, Official True Beauty will be recognised as a leading inclusive beauty brand — built on lived experience, research, and collaboration — continuing to set new standards for sensory-safe hair and skincare.
